I repeat — I am not a royalist

The whole monarchy, royal family thing is past its use-by date and belongs to an ignorant and innocent past. We should have outgrown it by now. But not for something worse!

I can hardly believe that people are still bowing and scraping when they get to meet a member of the British royal family. Up to a point I can understand bowing to the Queen. She sits at the top of the totem pole, and conducts herself with great dignity. As for the rest of the royal family and their distant cousins — what have they done to earn all the bows and scrapes? Not to mention the luxurious lifestyle.

You might argue that over the years they have kept the British and American public entertained with their scandalous divorces, not that divorce is exactly an historic rarity in royal circles. But it surely is entertaining!

Three of the Queen’s four children have divorced. Two have remarried, and one is in deep disgrace and has been unceremoniously tossed out of the royal family.

Her children have caused the Queen much heartache, all in the relentless glare of 24 hour spotlight. She has held it all together while dealing with her position as head of the British commonwealth —…
